Identify opportunities to enhance developing literacy (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) skills in young children from birth to age five. Hands-on experiences will be implemented as creativity and take-away lessons are designed during the session to be enjoyed by young children. Topics in this session will include creating literacy areas, developing storybook questions, phonological awareness, and developmentally appropriate environments.
Upon completion of this educational experience, the learners will:
- Describe a developmentally appropriate, print-rich environment in which children learn about book, literature and writing.
- Identify different types of questions during the story reading process.
- Identify rhymes, poems, songs, and finger plays that help children develop emergent literacy skills, such as phonological awareness.
- Examine current trends and their impact.
